Tokyo, January 27, 2011– Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today announced its next generation portable entertainment system (codename: NGP), which delivers the ultimate portable entertainment experience. NGP will make its debut at the end of the year 2011.
NGP is designed to offer unparalleled interactive entertainment that is only possible on PlayStation®. This new system offers a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context, made possible by leveraging SCE’s experience from both PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) and PlayStation®3 (PS3®) entertainment systems.
Deep and immersive gaming is at the core of PlayStation’s DNA, and NGP is the latest embodiment of this vision. By having both Wi-Fi and 3G network connectivity, together with various applications, NGP will enable infinite possibilities for users to “encounter,” “connect,” “discover,” “share” and “play” with friends wherever they are. Within the device are a range of features that provide a genuinely cutting-edge, next generation ultimate portable entertainment experience.
・Stunning OLED and Revolutionary User Interface
NGP incorporates a beautiful multi-touch 5-inch organic light emitting display (OLED) as the front display. A high-performance CPU / GPU combined with OLED enables rich, visually striking graphics never seen before on a portable entertainment system, for both games and other digital entertainment content. The new system also incorporates a unique multi-touch pad on the rear, and together with the front touch display, NGP offers new game play allowing users to interact directly with games in three dimension-like motion, through “touch, grab, trace, push and pull” moves of the fingers.
・Super Oval Design and Dual Analog Sticks
While succeeding the basic design philosophy of PSP, NGP adopts the Super Oval Design form factor, created to fit comfortably in users’ hands. For the first time, a portable entertainment system will feature two analog sticks, which enable a wider range of game genres to be brought into the portable experience.
・LiveArea™
Every game title for NGP will be provided with a space called “LiveArea™” where users can share the fun and excitement with other players. Users will have access to the latest information of games provided from SCE and 3rd party developers and publishers through PlayStation®Network. Additionally, NGP users will be able to view an “Activity” log that is constantly updated with accomplishments from users who are playing the same game, which in turn can trigger active real-time communication among users.
・Near
SCE will also provide location-based services on NGP as part of the basic features utilizing PlayStation Network. The new application called “Near,” developed specifically for this service and the network, will be pre-installed in the system to let users find out what their friends in the vicinity are playing now or what they were playing recently. Users can meet their friends and new players virtually, regardless of what games they are playing, simply by sharing their game information across different dimensions of time and distance.
・New Game Medium
NGP adopts a new game medium, a small flash memory based card, dedicated for NGP software titles. Taking advantage of the flash memory feature, this innovative card can store the full software titles plus add-on game content or the game save data directly on to the card. By adopting flash memory based card, SCE will be able to provide game cards with higher capacity in the future, allowing developers to store more game data to deliver rich and immersive games.
NGP will also come equipped with two cameras on its front and rear, as well as three motion sensors, gyroscope, accelerometer and electronic compass, all of which are designed to enable users to enjoy the world of entertainment that is linked with real life experiences.
PlayStation®Suite (PS Suite), announced today, will also closely coordinate with NGP. The newly developed and released game content for Android™ based portable devices can also be enjoyed on NGP. As a result, users will have access to not only the most leading-edge content, but also some of the more casual experiences that typify the mobile market place.
SCE will vigorously promote NGP towards the launch as the next generation portable entertainment platform and deploy various measures to further expand the portable gaming market.

Check out a 750,000 Layer Photoshop File of Times Square in NYC by Photoshop Artist Bert Monroy
Printed on Epson’s DisplayTrans Media with the Epson Stylus Pro 11880 printer, Monroy’s masterpiece is the culmination of four years of work. The digital artist created each element using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. He built the 6.5GB image pixel by pixel, using more than 750,000 Photoshop layers. Monroy spent countless hours creating intensely detailed scenes, the likenesses of his family, friends and many luminaries in the imaging industry, and landmarks in and around Times Square.

Displayed at this year’s PhotoPlus Expo in NYC, Monroy’s “Times Square” is action-packed with color and detail. People lean forward to study the print’s many stories depicted under the illuminated signs and bright lights of the city’s iconic landmarks. Hundreds of colorful characters can be seen throughout the image in groups, traveling solo, pointing at the sights, dodging yellow taxis, aiming cameras, shaking their fists, chatting amongst each other, dragging luggage, gazing longingly out of windows, and in some cases even thwarting crime.

This quick tutorial shows you how to use multiple strokes to build high-impact graphics in After Effects. This relatively simple trick is a great way to make your titles pop and stand out. All of the strokes are dynamic so if you change the font or text, the graphics will update automatically. We also use the Vegas effect to add dotted lines and even Vegas lights. This is a lot of versatility in this technique so get creative!

The Foundry is joining up with NVIDIA, CGSociety.org and 3D Artist Magazine to find the world's best MARI artist with: The Foundry Mari texture painting contest.
Prizes:
• An NVIDIA Quadro 5000 graphics card
• A licence and full maintenance for MARI
• A feature article about the winner on CGSociety and in 3D Artist Magazine
Deadline for submission:
* Monday 7 March 2011
To get the show started, The Foundry is supplying, Dezkin ( is courtesy of Oliver Marc Plouffe ), the model shown above for you to texture and if you can put the right detail in the devil you'll be rewarded with some very cool prizes indeed.
The artwork will be judged both on the overall composition and the resolution of the textures you create, and the best of the entries received will be examined in higher detail still.
We'll be looking for high resolution textures (4K+) implemented into a lookdev-ready texture setup (a minimum of colour, bump and spec maps for each shader). And idiosyncratic details which make the textures more believable will get bonus points too.
You could receive brownie points for submitting animated textures, renderable scenes (Maya and 3ds Max etc.) and showcasing your work in progress on CGTalk.
The first round, starting today, will be based on screenshots sent to mari-challenge@thefoundry.co.uk and WIP threads on CGTalk.
The competition will be judged by Jack Greasley and well known texture artist and CGTalk Chief moderator and host Leigh Van Der Byl.
While Leigh may be most well known on the web for being an administrator on the CG Talk forum, it's a lesser known fact that she has 10+ years of experience in the VFX industry on her resume, more than 20 feature films to her name and currently works as a senior texture painter at one of London's top VFX studios.

Foundry announced the MARI 1.2 Released with added Python integration, Texture Mirroring, a levels filter and improved GPU detection and support.
With some new features:
* Examples of importing exporting and project creation are provided along with more detailed examples of asset management integration and scene management.

* Texture Mirroring is a small feature that can be very useful when painting UV assets.
* Although it is not a real time symmetrical painting solution, it does allow symmetry to be achieved. Simple paint the right side then mirror to the left.
* Fractal noise is a useful tool in any artists toolbox. It can be used to add natural looking detail quickly and easily. MARI 1.2 implements two fractal noise tools.

* The Noise Filter fills a channel with user controllable fractal noise. This channel can then be used in a normal shader configuration.
* The Fractal Noise Mask is a user controllable masking tool that users generated noise to mask off different areas.
* Added a Levels Filter. The filter changes in the colour levels in the paint, by setting the white point, midstone, and black.
* New shader modules have been added for masked bump and improved Normal mapping.
* MARI now includes the ability to copy shaders between objects easily. Keeping shaders in sync can be quite difficult but this tool makes light work of sharing shader configurations between objects.

World's Most Comprehensive and Cost-effective Golf Performance Measurement System; Debuting at PGA Merchandise Show 2011
Corvallis, Ore. - Jan. 24, 2011 - Fulfilling the need for 3D, real-time swing analysis for retail, instruction and research & development, NaturalPoint® is introducing the new GEARS golf performance measurement system - built on the OptiTrack™ motion capture platform.
Utilizing NaturalPoint's OptiTrack cameras and software, GEARS combines the engineering-grade precision of optical tracking with a strong emphasis on an intuitive user interface - a combination that has made OptiTrack popular for applications ranging from biomechanical and scientific motion research, to film and game production.
The GEARS tracking module measures body, club and ball motion with real-time visual feedback. "We're offering a level of empirical swing analysis that the golf industry has never had access to before. GEARS measures hundreds of data points per second, including detailed 3D information like impact location, club head speed, shaft deflection, loft, lie, shoulder angle, spine angle and much more," said Jim Richardson, NaturalPoint co-founder and lead engineer for the OptiTrack motion capture line.
Additionally, powered by a simple interface and club modelling for the top 10 manufacturers in the world, the GEARS club recommendation module enables golf instructors and retailers to recommend the ideal club to customers based on their unique swing profile. "We're excited to offer an unprecedented view into the science behind golf, and how it impacts important decisions like club fitting, swing adjustment and product design," said Richardson.
GEARS systems are available in three configurations:
- GEARS Club
GEARS Club allows pro shops and sporting goods stores to become go-to retail sources for PGA-level expertise without the need or expense of a tour professional on staff. GEARS equips a sales force with the same leading-edge motion capture technology used by researchers to analyze the world's premier athletes, allowing retailers to transform their pro shop into a world-class golf research facility with the most advanced commercial swing analysis and club fitting system in the world. - GEARS Pro
GEARS Pro introduces body motion capture in addition to club tracking, enabling golf instructors to evaluate the time history of both club dynamics and body biomechanical motion from a single capture. The result is a holistic assessment of the client's golf swing with a scope of real-time data that traditional club tracking or ball tracking systems cannot provide. - GEARS R&D
GEARS R&D systems combine the GEARS Pro application with a custom golf-engineering build of Tracking Tools™ for comprehensive research and development capabilities. The complete package supports a variety of engineering workflows via tremendous customization and tracking capabilities.
Demonstrations of GEARS will be available at the PGA Merchandise Show 2011, Jan. 27 - 29, at the OptiTrack booth #473. For additional information, please visit www.optitrack.com.

According to joystiq.com, Propaganda Games -- developer of 2008's Turok reboot and, most recently, Tron: Evolution -- is officially closed. Parent company and publisher Disney Interactive confirmed the unfortunate news to Joystiq this afternoon, issuing this statement: "Disney Interactive Studios confirms the closure of its Vancouver-based internal game development studio, Propaganda Games. The studio has completed all work associated with its most recent project."
Propaganda's Pirates of the Caribbean game was canceled last October, and the studio was reduced in size, with the only apparent goal to complete Tron and its planned post-launch DLC. It's as yet unclear if any more DLC will be released beyond the day-one freebie.
