Side Effects flagship Houdini FX 13 is heavily used to build state of the art visual effects but there is another side where Houdini can be used apart from the feature film division. During Rainer Dudas journey through the wide field of 3D printing and a closer look into the scientific area of audio signals a new question appeared in his mind. „How does a song looks like?“

Hour of birth - Sonity EmeraldHoudini FX gave Rainer enough freedom to create a filter bank which analyzes incoming MP3 audio files corresponding to their signal characteristics based on acoustics and psycho acoustics. Each type of song, each genre has different characteristics which could form shapes - or better a plastic which shows the identity of the underlying file. The asset interface allows a user to select which area of the signal should be analyzed. The whole file or just a section? PCs with lower calculation power can build each bit of the plastic manually to avoid crashes.
Houdini FX powerful nodesBased on the filtered and analyzed results Rainers Houdini digital asset called Sonity Emerald builds a distinct and reproducible 3D shape plus pedestal which holds the name of the song. Additionally details could be added like spectral controid, spectral separation and many more. The data export occurs into the common STL format ready for 3D printing. By now machines are supported which uses technologies like MulitJet Modeling, Scan LED Techology and PolyJet Modeling.
